AOI Updates 12.09.2009

Posted by Kellogg's Camels | Friday, September 12, 2008 | 1 comments » | TOP | More Topics

Thanks again to my Firefox Update Scanner plugin and interesting for those who have no budget issues or simply need a trick to motivate their partner:) On a different note: the AOI online shop has opened

From 02 to 06 April 2009
11/09/2008
Due to the specificity of the rules and the location of the course (food self-sufficiency, desert, security issues…) no accompanying members are allowed on the race. But families, friends and sponsors can be at the finish line of the last 2 stages thanks to a special weekend with a dedicated support team.

The trip is organized in parallel with MARATHON DES SABLES (with different flights and hotels from competitors).

Tips and Tricks: Nutrition Recommendations

It was a pleasure to meet with you today for your nutrition assessment for your goal of high performance sports nutrition. The following are my recommendations, based on our discussion:

Energy needs during race:

  • 4200 kcal/day (700 kcal/hour x 6 hours) to replenish marathon requirements

  • 84.5 kg x 1.0 kcal/kg/hr x 18 hours/day not running = 1500 kcal/day

  • Total = 6000 kcal/day (including 300 calories for daily living);

  • Realistically, this may be too heavy for you, so let’s aim for 30-50% of your energy needs during the race, plus your metabolic needs = 3500-4000 kcal/day

Fluid recommendations:

  • 1.5 L/hour in high heat = 9 L over 6 hours

  • Actual: 750 ml (0.75 L or 3 cups or 24 oz.) per hour = 4.5 L during race; 4.5 L during prep and recovery each day

Electrolyte recommendations:

  • High heat: 300 mg sodium/hour

  • NB: 1 salt tablet = 2400 mg

  • Also need 75 mg potassium/hour

Concentrations:

  • Recommend 4-6% carbs with fluids (= 4-6 g of carbs per 100 ml fluid)

Carbohydrate needs:

  • Max usable carbs per hour = 60 g

  • Theoretical maximum = 0.7-1.0 g carb/kg/hr = 60-85 g carbs/hour (depletion)

  • If 750 ml E-load/hour = 48 g carbs from sports drink/hour

  • Plus minimum 12 g of carbs from any other source

Back to energy needs:

  • 60 g carbs/hr x 4 kcal/g = 240 calories from carbs/hour x 6 hours = 1440 kcal; still need ~500 calories during activity; this should come from fats and proteins (especially salt-rich, e.g. beef jerky or potato chips)

Timing:

  • Recommend no longer than 20 minutes without food or fuel

MDS Alternatives

The UK's Telegraph has some rather ambitious 'cures' for a midlife crisis:

  • Sail across the Atlantic
  • Climb Kilimanjaro
  • Cycle 950 Miles Across Britain
  • Walk Across Britain (12 - 15 Days)
  • Run the Marathon des Sables ... in the Sahara

... and after that, you'll probably relish returning to your midlife crisis ...

101 Kicks in the Butt

You have 100 reasons for losing motivation to run. But we can top 'em with tips, inspiring quotes, and more. Pick your fix. Repeat as necessary.

1. CREATE A BLOG where you post your daily mileage, then give out the Web address to your friends and family. Do you really want Aunt Ellen to ask why you skipped your four-miler on Wednesday?

2. MAMA, GET A NEW PAIR OF SHOES. Two-time Olympian Shayne Culpepper puts new gear she receives as an elite athlete to good use. "It's fun to break in a new pair of shoes," she says. "Sometimes that's enough to get me excited." Check this link for all 101 Kicks>>
